    The Ugly American
Created and Performed by Mike Daisey
    Directed by Jean-Michele Gregory
    Thrust Stage

Enjoy an unforgettable summer evening at Berkeley Rep with Mike Daisey, who bounded in last season with 21 Dog Years: Doing Time @ Amazon.com and now returns with a dazzling new tale about his misadventures as an exchange student in London. Expecting to be greeted by the ghosts of Shakespeare and Olivier, Daisey instead falls in with a post-modern, neo-feminist theatre group creating idiosyncratic shows in an abandoned church on the edge of town – and a very different kind of education begins. “Absolutely hilarious,” says the New York Times. “Comic delivery so sharp it draws blood,” says the San Jose Mercury News.

    Blue/Orange
    Bay Area Premiere
    by Joe Penhall
    directed by Tom Ross

Recent winner of England’s coveted Olivier, Critics’ Circle, and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play, this incendiary tale is a personal and ideological struggle about race, class, mental illness, and human isolation. This exhilarating comic drama is set in a London psychiatric hospital, where a young man brazenly claims to be the son of exiled African dictator Idi Amin.
Over the course of 24 hours, his two rival psychiatrists fight over his diagnosis and treatment in what the New York Times calls a “ferocious comedy, with dialogue fueled by testosterone and paced like a volley of bullets.” This hot property from London is a must-see.

    POLK COUNTY
Written by Zora Neale Hurston and Dorothy Waring
Adapted by Kyle Donnelly and Cathy Madison
    Directed by Kyle Donnelly
    WEST COAST PREMIERE

In 1944, Harlem Renaissance legend Zora Neale Hurston deposited her script for Polk County in the U.S. Copyright Office. There it lay unseen and untouched—until 1997, when this musical was discovered in the Library of Congress. A testament to Hurston’s abilities as anthropologist, folklorist and writer, Polk County tells the story of aspiring blues musician Leafy Lee as she leaves New York to return to her childhood home in the working quarters of a sawmill camp in Polk County, Florida. With a rich cast of characters and a live band performing dozens of authentic early blues songs, Polk County is a musical guaranteed to lift the spirits. The extraordinary individuals of this rural hometown face the hardships of survival in the Depression-era South with a sense of humor and faith in the Blues, forming an unforgettable ensemble whose existence is seldom easy but always lived with gusto.
